The Promised Land?
I was reading in Genesis how the Lord called Abraham to go out from his country, from family and friends to a land that He would show him. And during his lifetime Abraham travelled all around, passing through what would be the Promised Land a few times, before the Lord told him, ‘This is it!’
The first thought that came to mind was, ‘WHAT??? Go out to a land that the Lord will tell you about, but not specified yet? Could I do that?’ Well, Abraham was called The Father of Faith; a well-deserved name. I’m having a hard time thinking about our family reunion without trying to plan how to get there, the cost and hassle, what to bring, where we might stop along the way and where we’ll stay then, etc, etc, etc. This is for a three-week time frame. Abraham was making a major life decision that would change everything!
I read once that the way to be faithful unto death (what is required for the crown of life) is to just be faithful today, one day at a time, one moment at a time. Just doing what the Lord has for you at this very moment, no matter how mundane, is probably one step in this epic journey that is life.
My boys’ favourite toy used to be a shape sorter. They didn’t immediately grasp the concept of looking at the shape and seeing the corresponding hole; rather, they just tried out every hole and if it didn’t fit, carried on trying another one until it goes in or some helpful individual showed which one it goes into and positions it correctly.
I found that finding the Lord’s will is sometimes like that: we just go ahead with something new and if it doesn’t work out, well, we keep on trying until we find out what works. The Lord also has ways of stopping us when what we’re doing will cause serious harm. He also works everything out together for our good. We don’t always wait until all the lights are green and the traffic is clear before we head out in our vehicle. And in the same way, we don’t have to wait for a booming voice from the heavens before we can know what God’s will is. Then we’ll see the Promised Land that He has for us.
Not quite sure about the Promised Land. America used to be the promised land. Or was it Israel?
Everyone’s got their own Promised Land. My reading of it is that the Lord told Abraham to go and he’d be shown his promised land when he got there. He didn’t seem to know he was walking in the promised land nearly the whole time. 😉
Give it all to God-he has a plan. I do the action steps along the way, but he is ultimately the one who will make it happen if it is the right thing to do.
