As a volunteer missionary in Africa (they consider me ‘white’ even though I am of Asian descent), I am approached all the time for a handout and have nothing to give them, except time, prayers and tracts.

I would be a poor volunteer and missionary.
I always feel conflicted about giving money to people who beg for it. One time, a man approached me and asked for one dollar. He said that he had almost enough money to buy a bottle of beer and that he just needed one more dollar. He was so honest about his beverage of choice that I happily gave him the money. He ducked into a corner store and soon emerged with a beer bottle in a small paper bag. He saw me and raised his beverage high. He looked happy, and I felt happy for him.
