‘New’ Fundamentals?
The title comes from a Jim Rohn talk that I heard a long time ago. He said, ‘Fundamentals are OLD! Don’t tell me about a new fundamental. Beware if someone comes up with a new fundamental. It’s like if someone comes to sell you a manufactured antique!’ Sounds funny, and I may or may not have laughed out loud at that.
I thought of that because I was skimming a ‘self-help’ book. I’m a bit wary of the genre. I believe, yes, you do your part and God will do His part.
But the point of this article is that everything that was pointed out that could help pull yourself forward and upward in life comes down to fundamentals:
- Sleep – There a Bible verse that says that it’s useless to stay up late and wake early, stressing over work and life
- Meditation for peace of mind – The Bible has a verse about God keeping them in perfect peace who mind is stayed on Him
- Affirmations for power – The Bible says that we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength
- Visualization for the future you – The Apostle Paul says that this one thing he does, forgetting the things which are behind and reaching to things that are ahead, pressing toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God (also notice that the ONE thing is also mentioned)
- Flexibility in planning ahead – The book of James says instead of a rigid plan, instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’
On and on it goes. The Bible is the best ‘self-help’ book full of universal truths, I’ve found. There are even people who have written business books with the Bible as the basis. I find it fascinating. But like Ecclesiastes says, ‘There is nothing new under the sun,’ and we’ll leave it at that.
