Holy Spirit
1. The Holy Spirit’s part in our salvation:
A. We must be born of & made alive by the Spirit:
John 16:8,9 [The Holy Spirit reproves & convicts men of their sin]
John 3:5-8 Except a man be born of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God
John 6:63 It is the Spirit that quickeneth (gives life)
Titus 3:5 He saved us by the washing of regeneration, & renewing of the Holy Ghost

B. A measure of God’s Spirit is given to us when we’re saved:
2 Corinthians.1:22 Who hath sealed us, & given us the earnest (deposit) of the Spirit
Ephesians 1:13,14 After ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 4:30 The Holy Spirit, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption
C. The Holy Spirit assures us that we are saved:
Romans 8:16 Spirit beareth witness that we are children of God
1 Jn.3:24b We know He abideth in us, by the Spirit
1 Jn.4:13 Hereby know we that…He (dwelleth) in us, because He hath given us of His Spirit
D. The Holy Spirit testifies Jesus is the truth:
John 15:26 The Spirit of truth…shall testify of Me (Jesus)
John 16:14 He (the Spirit) shall glorify Me
2. The baptism (or overflowing) of the Holy Spirit:
A. Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit:
Matthew 3:11 He (Jesus) shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost
Luke 24:49 I send the promise of My Father upon you …ye [shall] be endued (clothed) with power from on high
John 7:38,39 Out of his belly flow rivers of living water… the Spirit
John 14:16 I will pray the Father & He shall give you (a) Comforter
John 16:7 I will send Him (the Comforter) unto you
Acts 2:1-4 [Spirit poured out on Christians on day of Pentecost]
B. When Christians receive the baptism of the Spirit:
Acts 8:15-17 [Samaritans baptised with the Spirit after salvation]
Acts 19:2 Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? They said, We have not
Acts 10:44-46 [Cornelius’ household was filled with the Holy Spirit at the same time they received Jesus]
C. Receiving the Holy Spirit:
Acts 19:1,2 Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
Luke 11:9-13 If ye know how to give good gifts…how much more shall (God) give Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?
1 Corinthians 6:19 Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost (See also 1Cor.3:16)
Ephesians 5:18b Be filled with the Spirit
D. The Spirit is often given by “laying on of hands”:
Acts 8:15-17 [Peter & John laid hands on the Samaritan believers]
Acts 19:6 [Paul laid hands on the Ephesian believers]
3. The purpose of the Holy Spirit baptism:
A. The Holy Spirit anoints us with power to witness:
Acts 1:8 Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you & ye shall be witnesses unto Me
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord hath anointed me to preach the gospel (See also Isa.61:1,2)
John 15:26 The Spirit of truth…shall testify of Me (Jesus)
Acts 4:29,31 They were filled with the Holy Ghost & spake the Word of God with boldness
Acts 5:32 Ye are His witnesses, & so is also the Holy Ghost
Micah 3:8 I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord…to declare to Israel his sin
B. Transforms us into a new person:
1 Samuel 10:6 The Spirit will come upon thee, and thou shalt…be turned into another man
Psalms 51:10-13 [Creates a clean heart & a right spirit]
C. Gives us a closer relationship with Jesus:
Ephesians 5:18,19 Be filled with the Spirit…singing & making melody in your heart to the Lord

D. Minding the things of the Spirit brings life & peace:
Romans 8:5-7 They that are after the Spirit mind things of the Spirit
Galatians 5:16,17 Walk in the Spirit, & ye shall not fulfil lust of the flesh
E. The Spirit brings forth virtues in our lives:
Galatians 5:22,23 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace [etc.]
Romans 5:5 The love of God is shed in our hearts by Holy Ghost
Romans 14:17 Righteousness & peace & joy in the Holy Ghost
Romans 15:13 Abound in hope through power of the Holy Ghost
1 Corinthians 12:4-11 [The Spirit gives us different kinds of spiritual gifts]
F. The Holy Spirit comforts us:
John 14:16,26 The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost
John 16:7 I will send (the Comforter) unto you
Acts 9:31b Walking in the comfort of the Holy Ghost
Romans 8:1 There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk…after the Spirit
1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached, happy are ye; for the Spirit of God resteth upon you
G. The Holy Spirit & prayer:
Romans 8:26,27 We know not what we should pray for…but the Spirit maketh intercession for us according to will of God
Jude 1:20 Building up yourselves…praying in the Holy Ghost
H. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth:
John 16:13b When the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth
1 John 5:6b The Spirit beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth

4. Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
A. The Spirit gives us wisdom & guidance:
Mark 13:11 It is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost
Luke 12:11,12 The Holy Ghost shall teach you…what ye ought to say
John 14:26b Holy Ghost shall teach you all things & bring all things to your remembrance (See also 1Jn.2:27)
John 16:13a The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth
1 Corinthians 2:9,10 God hath revealed them to us by His Spirit…yea, the deep things of God
1 Corinthians 2:12 We have received the Spirit that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God
1 Corinthians 2:13 We speak words which the Holy Ghost teacheth
1 Corinthians 12:8 [The Spirit gives word of wisdom, word of knowledge]
Ephesians 1:17 May God give you the spirit of wisdom & revelation
2 Timothy 1:13,14 Hold fast sound words…keep by the Holy Ghost
B. The Holy Spirit gives us the gift of prophecy:
1 Corinthians 12:7a,10 To one is given by the Spirit…prophecy
John 16:13b Spirit of truth will show you things to come
Acts 2:17,18 I will pour out of My Spirit…your sons & your daughters shall prophesy (See also Joel 2:28,29.)
2 Peter 1:21 Prophecy came…[when] men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost
C. The Holy Spirit gives us discernment:
Isaiah 11:2,3 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him…he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes
1 Corinthians 2:12-15 [We have received the Spirit of God and can spiritually discern matters]
1 Corinthians 12:10 [Gives gift of discernment of spirits] (Also 1Jn.4:1-6)
D. The Spirit gives faith, healing & miracles:
1 Corinthians 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by same Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:10 To another the working of miracles
E. The Spirit leads & checks (restrains) us:
Acts 8:29 [Specific directions:] The Spirit said to Philip
Acts 16:6,7 [Restrains:] The Spirit suffered (permitted) them not
Romans 8:14 As many as are led by Spirit of God are sons of God
Isaiah 30:21 [Spirit says:] This is the way; walk ye in it
F. The gift of tongues:
Acts 2:1-4 Spoke with other tongues as Spirit gave them utterance
1 Corinthians 12:10 To another interpretation of tongues (See 1Cor.14:13)
1 Corinthians 12:10,11 To another diverse kinds of tongues…all these worketh the Spirit
1 Corinthians 13:1 Speak with the tongues of men & of angels
1 Corinthians 14:2 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue…in the Spirit he speaketh mysteries
1 Corinthians 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth (strengthens) himself
G. God’s Spirit strengthens us:
Ephesians 3:16 Be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man

5. Freedom of the Holy Spirit:
1 Corinthians 3:17b Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty
Romans 8:2 The law of the Spirit…hath made me free from the law of sin & death
Romans 8:15 Ye have not received the spirit of bondage to fear, but the Spirit of adoption
Galatians 5:18 If ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law
2 Timothy 1:7 God hath (given) us the Spirit of power, of love & of a sound mind
6. The Holy Spirit inspires unity of believers:
Acts 4:31,32 They were all filled with the Holy Ghost…& the multitude were of one heart, & of one soul
1 Corinthians 12:13 By the Spirit are we all baptized into one body
2 Corinthians 13:14 The communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all

Acts 20:28 Feed the flock…Holy Ghost hath made you overseers
Romans 8:11 He shall quicken (make alive, resurrect) your bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you
8. Obeying the Holy Spirit:
A. The Holy Spirit is given to the obedient:
Proverbs 1:23 Turn at My reproof, I will pour out My Spirit unto you
Acts 5:32 The Holy Ghost, Whom God hath given to them that obey Him
B. Obey the Spirit once you are Spirit-filled:
Gal.5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit
1 Peter 1:22 Seeing that ye obey the truth through the Spirit… see that ye love one another
Revelations 2:29 Hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches
C. Warnings to obey the Spirit & not resist it:
Romans 8:5-6 [Living according to Spirit is life & peace; being carnally minded causes death]
1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural (carnal) man receiveth not the things of the Spirit, for they are foolishness unto him
Ephesians 4:29,30 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, grieve not the Holy Spirit
1 Thessalonians.5:19 Quench not the Spirit
Hebrews 3:7-10 The Holy Ghost saith, Harden not your hearts
D. Results of resisting the Holy Spirit:
Genesis 6:3a My Spirit shall not always strive with man
Isaiah 63:10 They rebelled & vexed (grieved) His Holy Spirit, therefore He…fought against them
Acts 7:51-53 Ye do always resist the Holy Ghost [resulting in them persecuting the prophets & disobeying God]
Acts 20:22,23 [Paul ignored the Spirit’s warnings, resulting in imprisonment & finally being beheaded–See also Acts 21:10-14]
- THE HOLY SPIRIT IN JESUS’ LIFE:
■ Mary was with child of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:18)
■ Jesus was conceived of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 1:20)
■ The Holy Ghost anointed Him (Luke 3:21–22)
■ Jesus’ ministry began with Him being full of the Holy Ghost (Luke 4:1)
■ God anointed Jesus with Holy Ghost and power (Acts 10:38)
■ God gave Him the Spirit without measure (John 3:34)
■ Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness (Luke 4:1)
■ He cast out devils by the Spirit (Matthew 12:28)
■ The Spirit raised Jesus from the dead (Romans 8:11; 1 Peter 3:18)
